2024 Matric Results and Their Impact on Rural Learners: What’s Next?

We share this piece to spotlight our Senior Schools’ / Ekukhuleni program, which provides additional maths, English, and Physical Sciences support to high-potential learners in Grades 10-12. Through focused academic support, afternoon study groups, and career guidance, Ekukhuleni helps learners navigate their school journey and plan for life beyond the classroom.

Every year, the release of South Africa’s matric results brings a mix of emotions—celebration for some, disappointment for others, and uncertainty for many. For learners in rural areas, matric is more than just an academic achievement; it’s a moment of reckoning. As we know, passing matric is not the finish line—it’s a possibility. But what comes next? Does it open doors to higher education, career opportunities, or does it highlight the next challenge?

The 2024 matric results have set a new national record, with a pass rate of 87.3%, up from 82.9% in 2023. This is the highest pass rate in the country’s history and a reflection of progress. Almost 48% of learners achieved Bachelor passes, qualifying them for university admission; a significant jump from last year. More importantly, 67% of these Bachelor passes came from schools in Quintiles 1 to 3, which serve disadvantaged communities. This shows that more learners from under-resourced backgrounds are gaining access to higher education opportunities.

However, as we know, the story doesn’t end with the pass rate. In rural communities, passing matric does not always guarantee a clear path to university or employment. Many learners still face barriers to further study, from a lack of funding to limited career guidance. Without the right support, even a Bachelor pass can feel like an uncertain achievement. Through our Pathways Program, Axium Education plays a key role in supporting learners after school. From Grades 9-12, learners receive career guidance, university application support, and access to information about post-school opportunities. Whether it’s higher education, vocational training, or work experience, the program ensures that rural learners have the knowledge they need to move forward with confidence.

I’m sure we can agree that matric is not the end of the road; it’s just one part of the journey. The increase in Bachelor passes from rural schools shows that more learners are reaching this point, but what happens next is what truly matters. With the right support, every learner can find a path that matches their goals and interests. The opportunities exist—with guidance and access, they can become a reality.
